Since 2013, I have been working to strengthen parent, patron, and community engagement in various volunteer roles as a PTA advocate and member of the grassroots advocacy organization Game On For Kansas Schools. I know how critically important every voice can be influencing policy decisions at every level. My guiding philosophy is simple - we are better as a community and school district when we work together to solve problems. I will work to help create stronger ties between the school board and community stakeholders.
As an engaged parent, I have seen many incredible things happening in the Shawnee Mission School District, but understand SMSD has room for improvement. Gaps exist that are holding some learners back. However, the election of new board members last year and hiring of a new superintendent provides a rare opportunity to create a new vision for the district. I am excited by the prospect of joining a talented team to help shape the direction. I embrace this chance to bring my knowledge of education policy, along with my experience working collaboratively to identify areas to improve, and solve problems to the SMSD Board of Education.
Quality public education should be available for all current and future students. We must ensure that public education is adequately supported with resources available for all learners to have the opportunity to be career and college ready. We must ensure that access to quality public education is not restricted based on zip code. I have been a vocal proponent of adequately and equitably funding Kansas public schools, walking the walk, walking to Topeka 60 miles, three times, with Game on for Kansas Schools to raise awareness of inadequate public school funding. I have also testified in committee, on behalf of Game On for Kansas Schools and PTA on multiple occasions. We must continue to ensure that our schools locally have the resources available to provide a quality public education.
